It’s an understatement to say that we are living in difficult times right now. Fear of illness, loss of loved ones, reduced personal freedoms, and the absence of physical connections are only a handful of the stresses we are all feeling these days.
If you look around, you will note that some people are managing fine, some are having severe difficulty coping, and still others are surprised at their own levels of anxiety. You might even be one of them, faced with this brand new experience and unfamiliar with your own response.
What makes the difference? It’s all about subconscious programming. The traumatic or upsetting events from our past, often from childhood but not always, leave their mark in our psyche, and until we understand, accept, and let go of them, those psychic scars create “glitches” in the subconscious program, leading us to behave in ways that feel outside of our control.
Let’s say, for example, that at some time in your past you lost someone to an illness. If you never fully examined and released all of the emotions around the loss, then it means that the psychic scar is still present and will result in reactive behaviours in certain scenarios. Maybe it makes you uncomfortable with hospitals? Or you dislike germs? Or you are obsessed with staying healthy? Most days, you wouldn’t even realize you had a problem at all: you have no need to think about hospitals; you’re good about washing your hands; you get regular exercise and eat healthy.
Today is different. We are in the midst of a pandemic and we fear it’s not too long until we or a loved one will need the care of a hospital. We’re told not only to wash our hands to stay safe, but to wear masks and sanitize our door knobs, surfaces, and everything we bring in from outside in case of contamination. And we’re trapped inside our homes where it is harder to exercise and easier to eat. We are anxious when we no longer feel in control, and it is now that those old underlying traumas are reminding us of their existence. Some of us are in severe jeopardy of losing our livelihoods, our homes, and our lives, and I have no desire to minimize those legitimate pressing concerns, but when the emotional distress is from something as objectively simple as “being stuck indoors,” it is worth investigating and unhooking the root cause.
For this month’s “Stories of the Subconscious” I want to share a situation my client, self described as “worrying about everyone.” She worried about the safety of her kids (both in their 20s), about her husband, and about being in dangerous situations (eg. driving in the rain) for herself as well. During our session, we realized that her subconscious has programmed in the belief “I am scared”. The subconscious constantly looks for ways to prove its existing beliefs to be true , so unconsciously, she was attuned to seeking out reasons to be scared.
As it turned out, she had a very good reason for her fear. When she was 7 years old, she witnessed her younger sister being hit by a car. Thankfully her sister recovered fine, but the trauma of the event was still there. The programming took place. It is easy to see how she took on the belief “I am scared” in the moment.
Once we established the link between the life event and her current anxiety, we were able to let the event go and replace her old belief with “Everyone I love is always safe.” Since then – and even now while we’re in the midst of this pandemic – I’m happy to report that she has been feeling much calmer and more relaxed about her family and herself.
Are the effects of Covid-19 triggering unfamiliar anxiety? Or making older anxieties worse? Then I invite you to book a session with me and be ready to handle the rest of this pandemic and beyond feeling emotionally strong and in control.
And since you’re here already…
Did you know that your environment can affect your energy levels and your mood? Now that we’re all stuck inside our homes, it becomes more and more important that you love the space that you’re in, and that it energizes rather than depletes you. My good friend, Tasia Keeng, is an intuitive, an interior decorator, a Feng Shui expert, and a home harmonizer. She can shift the energy in any space so that you can be comfortable being there. She has worked her magic in my own home and I love everything she has done. I’ve included for you her recent video on just this subject. And if you watch the whole thing, I’m included in a cameo.
BTW, she’s offering an amazing special at the end. If you decide to take her up on it, let her know I recommended her to you.
