There’s no punchline here…this is absolutely true.
A man from texas suffered from a condition called Gut Fermentation Syndrome, (aka Auto-Brewery). His gut was out of balance, overgrown with an organisim called Saccharomyces cerevisiae, better known as Brewers yeast; any time he would consume sugar or most carbs (food for yeast), ethanol would be produced and get absorbed into his bloodstream, creating a rise in his blood alcohol level and causing him to be intoxicated – all without consuming even a drop of alcohol!
The full case history was published in the International Journal of Clinical Medicine. It’s a short, fairly easy read (for a science journal), and quite interesting.
It brings me to a larger point about gut health, though. While this condition is admittedly rare, gut imbalances are not. It only takes a round of antibiotics or a period of illness or stress (be it physical or emotional, as I mentioned in a previous post , stress can wreak havoc on the body), and the delicate balance of good and bad bacteria in our digestive system can be thrown off.
Here’s a cute, short video put together by USANA about the importance of gut balance. (It’s actually an ad for their probiotic, but the information is sound nonetheless)
Many forms of stomach discomfort and worse are caused by an imbalance in the gut. (e.g. far more common than Auto-Brewery is a candida albicans overgrowth; a fascinating subject for a future post). If you suffer from regular gas or bloating, a good probiotic might very well do the trick to get you feeling better. And as the video mentioned, 80% of the cells of your immune system are located in the gut as well, so an imbalance there also affects how well your immune system functions.
If you’re interested in the USANA product, I am a USANA Independent Associate, so you can contact me if you wish to try it. (I use it myself and can feel the difference right away when I take it) Otherwise, there are lots of good probiotics on the market. If you think your digestive system could stand some improvement, then I strongly encourage you to give a good probiotic a try.
