A new video has just been released by the Centre for Science in the Public Interest, and if you’ve read a few of my previous blog posts, particularly Mike Bloomberg, you’re my hero! , and several that preceded it, you’ll know that I feel very strongly about the negative impact of refined sugars on today’s society: obesity, diabetes, and all the complications thereof have been skyrocketing, and a significant amount of this is due to increased consumption of added sugars.
I’m all for doing whatever works to get control over this epidemic, be it legislation or education. (I prefer education first, but it takes more time, and in my opinion this is a problem that is too big, and too devastating, to rely solely on long-term solutions.) The CSPI has created a pull-no-punches animated video that, I hope, will go a long way on the education front.
I generally try to use my posts to take something complicated in the world of nutrition and boil it down to the basics. The CSPI has done such an excellent job with their message, that this time, I’m going to share it as is. Below is the letter that was published by CSPI founder, Michael F Jacobs, including a link to the website with the video. I’ve also embedded the video here on this site, but I highly encourage you to visit the website in any case; there are many truths to be revealed, and they can’t all fit in 3-and-a-half minutes of film.
CENTRE FOR SCIENCE IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST
For the past 10 months we have been quietly working on a secret project
aimed at repositioning soda and other sugary drinks from a source of
happiness to a disease-promoting source of sadness.
Today we are announcing the world premiere of The Real Bears, an
animated short film featuring an original song by Grammy-award-winning
singer songwriter Jason Mraz. The Real Bears tells the story of a family
suffering from the adverse health impacts of soda consumption, including
weight gain, obesity, and tooth decay, as well as diabetes and its
associated complications, including amputation and erectile dysfunction.
In the film’s stirring conclusion, the family of Bears decides to
reclaim their health-and their happiness.
Soda and sugary drinks still are the biggest single source of calories
in the American diet, accounting for about 7 percent. And while
Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and other soda companies spend lavishly to position
the products as sources of happiness, sugary drinks are directly linked
to obesity and diabetes. Each additional sugary drink consumed per day
increases the likelihood of a child becoming obese by about 60 percent.
Drinking one or two sugary drinks per day increases one’s risk for type
2 diabetes by 27 percent.
The Real Bears family learns-like many real American families have-that
these conditions and their complications are sources of sadness, not
happiness.
We may not have Coke’s or Pepsi’s advertising budgets but we do have the
truth. And now we have The Real Bears. Please watch the film today:
Sincerely,
Michael F. Jacobson
