There’s yet another new diet book on the market, but this one seems to be gaining some traction. It’s called Six Weeks To OMG: Get Skinnier Than All Your Friends, and it has apparently replaced the Dukan Diet on the top of the bestseller list.
I must first say that I take issue with most diet books, and have little tolerance of them. The implication of a “diet’ is that it is a temporary solution to lose excess weight, after which time one will go back to “normal” eating. But it is precisely that “normal” eating that caused the weight gain in the first place. Anyone can lose weight on a diet, but it is the gradual transition to healthy eating for life that will make sure the weight stays off. It’s a very rare book that comes out with sound principles that can be adapted to long-term, healthy living.
I also need to admit that I have not read the book, however from reading a multitude of reports on it, I have gleaned a pretty good idea of its contents; therefore, I have no qualms whatsoever about discussing it with some authority.
Here are the basics of the OMG diet.
1. After waking, drink 2 cups of black coffee (the author suggests this as caffeine has been shown to have some effect on boosting metabolism). Caffeine is a stimulant and is also habit-forming. Overuse can cause heart palpitations, as well as anxiety and sleep disturbances. Is this really a healthy change to be recommending?
2. Skip breakfast. Exercise on an empty stomach. Do not eat for 3 hours. (the author suggests that this forces the body to use its own fat stores for fuel). Ever heard of Sumo wrestling? These wrestlers typically weigh 300-400lbs. Two of the cornerstones of the sumo wrestler diet are to skip breakfast and exercise on an empty stomach. Skipping breakfast is known to lower the metabolism as the body is already in a fasting state; it begins to conserve energy the longer it is deprived of food. Exercising on an empty stomach also does the same; the body will try to try to use a minimal amount of fuel during exercise, rationing what is available. This also leaves you hungrier later, and therefore more likely to overeat. Sumo wrestling has been around for over one thousand years…that’s a lot of time to perfect the diet.
