Hello my friend,
In most of my posts
, I share with you my clients’ experiences and provide the links between the problem or challenge they’re facing and the underlying root cause.
As fun and fascinating as it is, there’s only a small chance that any given story will reflect what’s going on in your own life. It provides some insight into how the subconscious operates, which is useful in an of itself, but that’s as far as it goes. They don’t offer you the tools to decipher your own unconscious mind.
The best tool for that is mindfulness. Mindfulness does not equal meditation, although there are specific meditation practices that enhance mindfulness. I say this with some certainty because I have noticed that of all of the clients I’ve worked with, the ones who respond the fastest to ART practice being mindful.
So what is mindfulness, anyway? How is it different from meditation? The picture above describes it in a nutshell – what it is, and what it isn’t.
Meditation involves the quieting of the mind. So does mindfulness. Some types of meditation have you trying to keep your mind completely free of extraneous thoughts – focusing on your breathing; or repeating a mantra; walking through a visualization exercise; or something else.
Notice that mind of the little girl in the picture wasn’t blank. She was focused on noticing her surroundings. Mindfulness meditation involves
being present
.
Paying attention to your senses – what do you hear, smell, feel, and see around you? And noticing your body. Do you feel heaviness somewhere? Is something twinging? Is an area throbbing? Your subconscious mind communicates to you through your body. Early on, it is subtle. If you don’t pay attention to it, it eventually turns into pain that you can’t ignore.
Mindfulness has been scientifically proven to help relieve stress, anxiety, depression, and pain; and as I’ve said, it’s the stepping stone to myriad types of healing through the subconscious.
If you would like to learn how to be more mindful, then I’m going to shamelessly plug the MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) course being offered by my sister, Rani Bhatia-Durand
, starting next week.
Rani is an intelligent, vibrant, witty, insightful, and charismatic woman who knows her stuff and is gifted in her ability to share her knowledge with others. She was also my role model growing up…so I figure if you like working with me, it’s a safe bet you’ll like learning from her as well.
